Ultimate Guide and Best Practices for Using Icons in UX/UI

Selecting the right icon library is crucial for maintaining consistency, enhancing user experience, and facilitating scalability in projects. A good use of icons can drastically improve design, but a misuse of icons can also worsen it, so use them responsibly.

Short answer

Choose one icon library at the start of the project, matched to your brand and big enough to grow with it. Use as few icon sizes as possible on a 4px grid, match each icon to the line height of the text beside it, and give every interactive icon a touch area of around 48px. Name icons by what they show, not what they do, and ship them as SVG.
